    1. Girl Power
      Founded in the 11th century, initially Oxford uni only admitted male scholars. It wasn’t until 1878 the first female students were permitted and it took another 48 years before they could earn degrees.
    2. Bachelors
      During the Middle Ages, Oxfords students were prohibited by law from marrying, this is the derivation of the term ‘bachelor’ in academia (i.e. Bachelor of Science).
    3. Fit For A King
      King Charles I made Oxfordshire his new home and oxford his new capital city during the English Civil War, 1642 – 1646, having been forced out of London by Parliament.
    4. Smaller than Leeds
      Despite being one of the UK’s most visited counties, it has a relatively small population, in fact you could house Oxfordshire’s entire population in Leeds and still have room to spare!

      During WWII the county was largely untouched by bombing raids because Hitler had picked Oxford as his future capital.

      Oxfordshire is home to the world’s oldest public museum. The Ashmolean Museum has been fascinating people since 1683.

      Alice In Wonderland creator Lewis Carroll was a mathematics lecturer at Oxford and based his most famous character on Alice Lidell, daughter of the college dean.
